Forex
Chargeback Guide

How a card dispute against a broker actually works: what qualifies, how long you have, what the bank needs to see, and who shows up afterwards asking for a fee.

Updated:

Key takeaways

  • A refund needs the broker to agree. A chargeback does not.
  • Card payments have a real reversal route. Wires are poor, and crypto has none.
  • Visa and Mastercard usually count 120 days from the transaction or expected delivery.
  • Of 47 Finexo victims, the 21 who recovered in full all filed within 60 days.
  • Nobody legitimate charges a fee before returning your money. Recovery firms are the second scam.

What A Chargeback
Actually Is

A refund needs the broker to agree. A chargeback does not.

A refund is the broker giving your money back. A chargeback is your bank taking it back, whether the broker agrees or not.

That difference decides everything. A refund needs cooperation from a firm that has stopped answering. A chargeback needs a card network rule and a file that fits it.

You are not asking the broker for anything. You are telling your card issuer that you paid for a service and did not receive it.

What Can Be Disputed, And What Cannot

How you paidRoute backRealistic odds
Credit or debit cardChargeback through the card networkBest available
PayPal or similar walletThe provider's own dispute processWorkable, shorter window
Bank wireRecall request, then the courtsPoor
Crypto transferNoneEffectively zero

That table explains why deposit pages push crypto and wire so hard. Both are one-way doors, and a broker that wants one-way doors is telling you something before you send anything.

Trading losses are not a chargeback case. Losing money on your own trades is the service working. The case exists when the service was never delivered, or delivered fraudulently.

How Long You
Actually Have

The window is measured in days, and arguing with the broker spends it.

Card networks give you a window, not an open door. Visa and Mastercard usually count 120 days from the transaction, or from the date the service should have been delivered.

Some categories stretch further, up to 540 days. Your issuer decides which rule applies, so ask them the exact deadline in writing on day one.

Waiting costs more than the calendar suggests. Every week you spend arguing with the broker is a week off your own clock.

What Early Filing Was Worth In Our Cases

Of 47 victims we tracked at Finexo, 21 recovered in full. Every one of them filed within 60 days.
Another 12 recovered part of the deposit, between 15% and 70%.
At TradeFW, 3 of 27 recovered through a chargeback. Most of the rest had paid by wire.

The pattern in both case files is the same. Card, filed early, documented: money back. Wire, filed late, argued by email first: gone.

File the dispute first and keep talking to the broker afterwards. The two are not mutually exclusive, and only one of them has a deadline.

A broker promising to "resolve it internally next week" is often buying time against your dispute window. Note the promise, keep the date, file anyway.

What The Bank
Needs To See

Decided on paper by someone who never heard of your broker.

A dispute is decided on paper by someone who has never heard of your broker. Your job is to make the story obvious in two minutes.

Lead with one sentence: you paid for a service, you asked for your funds, the firm refused or went silent. Everything else supports that sentence.

What Goes In The File

Every payment. Date, amount, currency, and the descriptor that appeared on your statement.
The withdrawal request. A screenshot with the request number and the date, taken from inside the account.
The refusal or the silence. Exported support threads, in date order, with nothing edited out.
The terms you accepted. Save the version live on the day you signed. Those pages get rewritten.
Any regulator record. A warning notice or a withdrawn licence carries weight with an issuer.

How To Word It

Say "services not rendered", not "I lost money trading". The second one is not a dispute.
Give dates, amounts and reference numbers. Leave out how the whole thing made you feel.
Ask for the reason code the issuer filed under, and keep their case number.

Expect the broker to answer with your own signature. Accepted terms, a completed KYC and a used platform are their standard defence. Your file has to show what happened after that.

Who Contacts You
Afterwards

A loss puts you on a list, and the list gets sold.

Filing a dispute makes you visible. Lists of people who just lost money get sold, and a second crew arrives within weeks.

They introduce themselves as lawyers, as a compliance desk, or as a firm that recovers funds. What they never give you is a name you can look up.

Then comes a fee. A release fee, a tax, a court filing, a charge to unlock a wallet. The deadline is always short, and always on purpose.

Three Rules That Break The Chain

Never pay up front. No genuine recovery route charges you before returning anything.
Look them up yourself. Use a public register you found, not a link they sent.
Call back on your own number. Take the firm name, find the switchboard, dial that.

A new fee after every payment is the whole scheme in one line. When the finish line moves each time you reach it, there is no finish line. The full sequence is mapped in the recovery scam chain.

Free routes exist and cost nothing: your card issuer, the broker's regulator, your national financial ombudsman, and the police. Try all four before anyone who wants a fee.

If the broker held a real licence when you deposited, check the investor compensation scheme. Under CySEC that is the ICF, capped at โ‚ฌ20,000, and the wait is long.

Chargebacks: FAQ

What is a forex chargeback?

It is your card issuer reversing a payment to a broker, using card network rules. The broker does not have to agree. You are telling the bank that you paid for a service and did not receive it.

How long do I have to file a chargeback?

Visa and Mastercard usually count 120 days from the transaction, or from the date the service should have been delivered. Some categories reach 540 days. Ask your issuer for the exact deadline in writing on the first day.

Can I get money back if I paid a broker by bank transfer?

The odds are poor. A wire has no chargeback route, only a recall request that the receiving bank can refuse. Crypto has nothing at all. Card payments are the only method with a real reversal mechanism.

Will a chargeback work if I lost the money trading?

No. Losing on your own trades means the service worked as described. A dispute needs services not rendered, or fraud. A blocked withdrawal, a fake licence, a platform that would not let you close.

What evidence does the bank need?

Payment records with statement descriptors. A screenshot of the withdrawal request with its number and date. The full support thread, the terms as they stood when you signed, and any regulator warning about the firm.

Should I pay a recovery firm to help?

No. Nobody legitimate charges you before returning anything. Fund recovery offers arriving after a loss are the second stage of the same scam. Your card issuer, the regulator, the ombudsman and the police all cost nothing.
